It looks like this will be my last reading of my original copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. It’s been glued and taped back together more times than I can remember. While I was reading it today, the last 130 pages fell out, so it looks like it’s about time to retire this copy. We’ve been through a lot together.
My grandmother bought it for me at a yard sale when I was in elementary school, but I refused to read it because I thought it was going to be just another one of those books that everyone else loved but I never liked at all. Then one day when I got bored (I was supposed to be cleaning my room at the time), I picked it up and began to read. After the first chapter, I was hooked and read the whole thing in one sitting. (Something I always used to have time to do when I was a child… Man, I miss that!)
Harry Potter was such a huge part of my childhood; I honestly can’t imagine what my life would have been like without it. It helped my brother and I stay close throughout the years (he’s five years older, so it was nice to have something in common we could both get overly excited about), and it was always a great escape for me when other parts of my life were falling apart.
I’m not sure what the point of this post is, other than to say that I really wish I could give JK Rowling a big fat hug from myself and everyone else who has grown up with Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
